"Embrace me, tighter than ever.
I hear your voice on restless night.
The world will be drowned with blood someday.
Just let me forget that news.
I don't want to know.
Nobody reason, nobody sure when is the end.
Ah, Just a little bit more, I don't care if it's all lies.
Sing for me!!
But if this rickety, powerless ark keeps rowing along.
Nobody reason, no one confess that it was wrong."
I just watched "The Hidden Blade" at GV Plaza. I would say that it's really great samurai movie. Let me describe the movie abit here. It's set in the mid-19th century when Japan is being divided between hardcore loyalist and modern reformist after Perry Black Ship landed on the shore. The story bring us to a small town where most reformist situated. They learnt how to use the cannon and how trained with the rifle while perfecting their skill of the katana. Katagiri is the main character in the story, which show how he lives his life. Respected swordman and the 2nd strongest in his clan. His good friend, Hazama went to Edo to find work while he stayed in the small town. He even went great deed of piggyback his former maid, Kie who was badly treated in her husband house. Eventhough it was a "normal" thing to do now but it will caused some commotions back then. Then news came, Hazama was arrested as he plotted in the revolt against the shogunate. He was even refused of the privilege of committing suicide in order to save his honor. Hazama was sent back to his hometown in a prisoner basket but managed to kill the guard and barricaded himself in a phesant house. The governor ordered Katagiri to kill Hazama as he knew that in term of skill, Katagiri matched Hazama. Facing a dilemma, he decided to accept it as his initial plan was to persuade Hazama to commit hara-giri instead of him killing him. But Hazama stubborness and obsession of claiming he was the strongest led him to his death. Hazama was shot by the gun squadron when the fighting brought to the open. He was already sad and angried by the governor for ordering him to kill his best friend. It was made worst when it was known that Hazama's wife slept the governor hoping to order Katagiri to let his husband escaped. The governor lied to him saying he will but confessed that he had to kill Hazama but couldn't bare to say no to his wife's charm. With this, he set for revenge in killing the governor which he succeeded. He was never caught as there are not witnesses and the weapon he used making the governor having a puncture wound on his left chest without bleeding which then, the doctor claimed as being "not done by a human". After that, he renounced his samurai status, left the clan, marries Kie and left for Ezo Island.
My conclusion of this, well for those looking for high profile samurai fight scene like those in anime, Rurouni Kenshin or Samurai Ressurrection. Well there is only 2. One as mentioned above, it's between Katagiri and Hazama. The other is not consider a fight scene but rather Katagiri went to look for his master in order to acquire the succession technique that would matched Hazama. It's mostly drama with a mixed of comedy. So for a samurai movie fan, this is definately a must to watch.
Planning to watch Divergence with her and vanessa this coming thursday, still considering the fact that we are no longer the type of friends we used to be.
